The Hunger Games takes place in the not so distant future, in the country of Panem, or what once was known as North America. Panem is divided into 13 districts, all with their own specialty such as fishing, agriculture, industry, and coal mining. However, after a failed attempt at a revolution, District 13 has been annihilated. To commemorate the destruction of District 13, the government of Panem holds an annual competition known as the Hunger Games, in which one boy and one girl, ages 12 to 18 must enter their name into a lottery to be chosen to participate. The Hunger Games is held in an elaborate arena, where the contestants face extremely dangerous and lethal obstacles created by professional Game Makers. Twenty-four contestants go in, one comes out. It's a fight to the death, and the entire event is broadcast over national television.
When 16 year old Katniss Everdeen's younger sister, Prim, is chosen to be the female contestant for District 12, Katniss volunteers to take her place. Katniss is paired with her male counterpart, Peeta, and together they become the Underdog duo of the Hunger Games, and the hope for a country in despair.
